Introducing Oshawa’s 2023 Junior Fire Chief

Oshawa Fire Services is pleased to announce this year’s Junior Fire Chief! Mary is a Grade 6 student from Vincent Massey Public School. Her award-winning video on smoke alarms and home escape planning led to her being named 2023 Junior Fire Chief.
The Junior Fire Chief contest encouraged Oshawa students in Grades 5 and 6 to submit a video outlining the importance of smoke alarms and home escape planning.

Emergency Preparedness Week is May 7 to 13, 2023 and the City of Oshawa reminds us that emergencies such as severe weather events or prolonged power outages can occur anytime, anywhere.
Community members are encouraged to be ready for an emergency by preparing an emergency kit for their home. On April 28, the City of Oshawa observes National Day of Mourning to remember those who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness at work.
Today, flags at City facilities will fly at half-mast and the City will lower the Day of Mourning Flag at City Hall in honour and remembrance of workers who have lost their lives or suffered injury or illness on the job or due to a work-related tragedy.

E-bike and E-scooter Reminders

As we welcome two new ride-sharing providers to our city for a micro-mobility pilot project, community members are reminded to be courteous and follow these rules for safety when using an e-bike or e-scooter in Oshawa:
Users are reminded that:
- Riders must be 16 or older to use an e-bike or e-scooter.
- Helmets are mandatory for riders under 18 years old and encouraged for all riders.
- Travel should be at a safe speed based on the condition of the trail;
- The maximum speed limit is 20 km/hr.
