Civic Recreation Complex Project Updates
Civic Outdoor
Track Project
The Civic Recreation Complex is known for its outdoor track and stadium that hosts numerous track and field events each year along with football and soccer games and training. The City of Oshawa is committing a $2.3 million investment to renovate the Civic’s outdoor track and jumping runways. During this renovation period, the outdoor track and runways will be closed.
We know the outdoor track is important, especially for track and field events and hosting groups and organizations from across Durham Region and beyond. We understand this closure is inconvenient and appreciate your understanding. We are taking all reasonable steps to complete the essential repairs as quickly as possible.
Why is the track closed? |
During a third-party inspection in summer 2024, it was determined that the surface of the track is nearing the end of its lifespan and no longer meets competition standards. An engineering consultant was retained to complete a comprehensive evaluation of the work required. It was determined that the scope of the project would require a complete replacement of the current track. While we understand the track’s importance for local athletic events, including track meets each spring season, this closure is necessary to ensure the long-term quality and functionality of the facility. |
What repairs are needed? |
Funding for the essential repairs has been allocated in the City’s 2025 budget, with a $2.3 million investment dedicated to repairing and upgrading the track and field facilities. Additionally, the City has applied for a provincial grant through the Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund to assist with the cost. The renovation will include replacing the current track with a new rubberized surface to enhance its quality and better serve the needs of the community and sport users. This upgrade represents a significant investment in the Civic Recreation Complex and highlights our commitment to providing exceptional recreation facilities. While the renovation timeline is still being finalized, we will continue to share updates with our user groups and on this webpage as the project progresses. |
Will there be Spring track meets this year? |
In fall 2024, we communicated to our user groups and partners that the Civic outdoor track will not be operational this season. While the renovation work cannot occur during the winter months, it will begin as soon as weather permits. We are taking all reasonable steps to expedite the project. We ask that track users and event participants contact their respective track and field organization for information on alternative arrangements that have been arranged or are being investigated. |
Will Field 1 be available this year? |
We will provide further communication including any potential impact to the availability of Field 1 once the renovation timeline has been finalized. |
How do I receive updates on the project? |
We are committed to continuing to provide updates. As the project progresses, updates will be posted here on this dedicated webpage. Thank you for your continued support and patience during this time. |
Civic Dome Heating Replacement Project
Additionally, the Civic Dome is currently undergoing a heating replacement project, which will continue through the winter months. As a result, the dome will not be heated during this period and colder temperatures are expected inside.
