Building on a century of success
Celebrating the resiliency of Oshawa’s industrious past and pointing to a bold new future ahead for the city, Mayor Dan Carter delivered a passionate and inspiring 2024 State of the City Address to a sold-out audience of business and community leaders at the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce Mayor’s Luncheon on February 15.
Mayor Carter began his annual State of the City Address by marking Oshawa’s Centennial, reflecting on the progress Oshawa has enjoyed and led over the last 100+ years and since becoming a City in 1924.
Mayor Carter highlighted that some of the greatest milestones in Canadian history have come from Oshawa thanks to its gifted and talented leaders, who through their curiosity, innovation and partnerships have propelled the City forward over the last century.
He emphasized that these leaders have strengthened Oshawa’s resiliency, building a solid foundation for its success today as a vibrant and diverse city, home to three globally-recognized post-secondary institutions, state-of-the art health care and research facilities and amazing amenities.
In looking ahead to the next 100 years, Mayor Carter spoke to Oshawa and its partners continuing to innovate in the fields of energy, health care, education and transportation, as well as emerging technologies such as AI, cyber security, and electric and autonomous vehicles.
As much as he touched on past successes, Mayor Carter also noted recent innovations driving our future economy, including Project Arrow, Canada’s first zero emission concept electric vehicle; the da Vinci Surgical System, a minimally-invasive robot-assisted surgical program at Lakeridge Health; and the smartARM, the world’s first bionic arm powered by vision.
Mayor Carter ended his address by thanking local community and business leaders for their ongoing support and collaboration in building upon Oshawa’s success.
“We are the great City of Oshawa because of our rich heritage and what we have accomplished together. It is because of you – Oshawa’s leaders past and present – that we have achieved so much and have many great stories to tell. As we enter into the next 100 years, I am excited for Oshawa’s future – our best days are in front of us,” added Mayor Carter.
