City of Oshawa extends condolences on the passing of The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney
On behalf of Oshawa City Council, Mayor Dan Carter extends his condolences to the family and friends of The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Canada’s 18th Prime Minister.
Flags have been lowered to half-mast at City Hall and City facilities to honour the memory of The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney. The flags will remain at half-mast until sunset on the day of the funeral or memorial service.
Born in 1939 in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, Mr. Mulroney studied political science and law and began his career as a lawyer.
Mr. Mulroney became leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada in 1983. He was elected as Canada’s 18th Prime Minister in 1984, leading the country for nine consecutive years. As Prime Minister, Mr. Mulroney elevated Canada on the globe stage, opposed apartheid in South Africa, served as co-chair of the United Nations' World Summit for Children, and introduced significant economic reforms.
After leaving office, Mr. Mulroney returned to law and was an international business consultant. He served on the board of directors of multiple corporations. In 1998, Mr. Mulroney was awarded Canada’s highest honour, Companion of the Order of Canada.
“Mr. Mulroney is remembered as a courageous leader. As Prime Minister, he introduced significant economic change initiatives in our country and promoted Canada’s active participation on the global stage, opposing apartheid in South Africa and leading efforts to respond to the Ethiopian famine. On behalf of Oshawa City Council and the City of Oshawa, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Mulroney,” said Mayor Dan Carter.
