Community Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee: call for applicants
The City of Oshawa is seeking applicants for our Community Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.
The consultative committee supports the City in matters related to diversity, equity and inclusion to ensure that the City and its programs are open and accessible to all.
The Committee:
- Provides support to City staff to implement the actions outlined in the Diversity and Inclusion Plan.
- Provides input to City staff on various issues and initiatives concerning diversity, equity and inclusion in our community.
- Provides input to City staff on the elimination of barriers within City programs, services and policies.
- Assists staff with education on the benefits of diversity, equity and inclusion and celebrates the diverse social, cultural and traditional elements in our community.
- Provides a forum for discussion to foster greater understanding and awareness of diversity, equity and inclusion matters through community partnerships.
The Committee is comprised of 12-15 members from the community who represent various communities in Oshawa with a particular focus given to groups who have traditionally faced systemic discrimination, such as:
- Indigenous peoples
- Faith-based groups
- Newcomers, new Canadians
- LGBTQ2S+
- Persons living in poverty
- Persons with disabilities
- Racialized people, people of diverse ethnic or cultural origin
- Seniors
- Women
- Youth
Applicants who are interested in donating their skills and time will be considered through an interview process based on:
- commitment as a change-agent in diversity, equity and inclusion matters in the community
- knowledge, living or lived experience with diversity, equity and inclusion matters
- experience working in teams, with community groups, boards or organizations
Committee members are expected to:
- Demonstrate commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the City and the Committee
- Commit the necessary time to attend meetings, get involved in Committee work and attend events
- Live, work or study in Oshawa through the duration of their term
- Commit to a two-year term
