New affordable housing community in Oshawa to benefit 50 local families
The City of Oshawa is pleased to see Habitat for Humanity GTA begin construction on a new townhouse project that will bring 50 affordable housing units to our community.
Construction started this summer on the 50-home Habitat community located at 485 Normandy Street (near Dean Avenue) in Oshawa. Families are currently being matched for phase one of the three-bedroom stacked townhouse units expected to be completed in 2022.
The townhouses are being built on former City-owned land that was sold to Habitat for Humanity Durham (which has since merged with Habitat for Humanity GTA) for the construction of new affordable housing.
The joint efforts of Habitat for Humanity GTA and the City of Oshawa have yielded an innovative residential project resulting in 50 new affordable housing units in Oshawa. More information is available on the Habitat for Humanity website.

“We are excited to see the launch of a new Habitat community in Oshawa that will provide 50 families with affordable home ownership,” said Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter. “Collaborations with caring community partners like Habitat for Humanity GTA are helping us find new and innovative ways to help families.”
“The global pandemic has shed an intense spotlight on the need for housing in communities across Canada,” said Councillor Tito-Dante Marimpietri, Chair of the Development Services Committee. “As a result, the City has put a parcel of surplus land to a higher use to give more families the opportunity to find a safe home to live.”
“This 50 unit project on Normandy St. is very welcome and an inspiring project and Habitat for Humanity’s biggest affordable housing project in Durham Region to date!” said Councillor Rosemary McConkey, Vice-Chair of the Development Services Committee. “Since the amalgamation of Habitat Durham and Habitat GTA at the beginning of 2020 a lot has been happening. The 28 unit freehold units on Centre St. S. are complete and now the 50 new stacked condo townhouse units being built on Normandy St. and Dean Ave will include 10 fully accessible ground floor units. Habitat’s unique equity sharing model to help give disadvantaged families desiring home ownership a hand up is certainly something to celebrate.”
“As the Ward Councillor for the area, I am very pleased to see this project start construction and I am looking forward to welcoming 50 new families to our community,” said Councillor Brian Nicholson, Ward 5 Regional and City Councillor. “The exciting opportunity to provide needed affordable housing is a wonderful partnership between the City of Oshawa and Habitat for Humanity GTA. I look forward to building on this success with many more similar projects in Oshawa.”
“Habitat for Humanity offers families the joy of home ownership and the opportunity to volunteer to help build their own home. Fifty more families will achieve a better life,” said Councillor John Gray, Ward 5 City Councillor.
“Communities thrive when everyone has the foundation of a decent and affordable home from which to begin the work and school day. Habitat for Humanity GTA’s 50-home build at 485 Normandy Street is our biggest undertaking yet—it’s taken political leadership and foresight by the Oshawa City Council and multiple actions seen and unseen by municipal planning staff, consultants, volunteers and donors. When they move into their homes, some of Durham Region’s hardest working families will free up badly needed rental units, creating a positive ripple effect on overall affordable housing supply,” said Ene Underwood, CEO, Habitat for Humanity GTA.
