Job Description
Reporting to the Supervisor, Traffic Field Operations or designate, perform all duties assigned and operate all equipment related to traffic field operation activities. Responsibilities
Perform all duties and operate all equipment related to:
- Installation and maintenance of regulatory, warning and information traffic signs and supports
- Layout and implementation of road closures for construction and maintenance projects, emergencies and special events of which may be scheduled on weekends and after normal operating hours
- Layout and application of various painted and plastic pavement markings
- Placement, maintenance and downloading of automatic traffic counting equipment
- Installation and maintenance of guide rail and other roadside protection devices
- Patrol and inspection of downtown decorative lighting, walkway lighting and municipal parking lot lighting
- Perform various traffic and roads maintenance duties related to the winter control/call board
- Complete and maintain neat and accurate daily work forms and records relevant to the job, (i.e. time cards, work orders, traffic control plans etc.)
- Conduct and summarize field inventories and inspections of traffic control devices through a scheduled program using computerized equipment
- Work in accordance with City of Oshawa Safe Work Standards, Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Ontario Traffic Manual, and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act
- Perform various duties related to the Winter Control/Call Board
- Maintain work areas in a neat and safe condition
- Perform other duties as required
Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience in traffic operations and related equipment including pavement marking machines, pavement marker remover, material handling equipment, automatic traffic counters and loops, hand held sign inspection equipment, tractor mounted auger, compressed air breakers, hydraulic pounders, chainsaws and a variety of hand tools
- Working knowledge in the aspects of sign maintenance, line painting and installation of roadside protection devices.
- Good communication skills and ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Able to perform arithmetic calculations at a Grade 12 level
- Able to complete forms relevant to the job requirements
- Willing to train staff on equipment relevant to the position
- Good interpersonal skills, ability to apply common sense and deal courteously with the general public as well as able to discuss routine information with colleagues effectively
- Good computer skills and experience software applications such as Word, Excel, Frontlink, as well as handheld GPS units, traffic counting software and reflectometers
- Physically fit and able to climb, stretch, lift and move heavy items (80 lbs/36 kgs); stand, bend, walk, shovel, pound, use hand tools for extended periods of time and capable of performing the work assigned in a safe manner
- Able to work co-operatively and effectively with co-workers in groups over extended periods as well able to work alone or with minimal supervision
- Able to work night shifts and weekends as required
- Knowledge and understanding of and the ability to apply Safety Policies, Standards and Legislation in WHMIS Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and the Ontario Traffic Manual
- Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Driver’s Licence, minimum Class “DZ” in good standing, and be able to pass the Corporation’s tests for motor vehicle operation
- First Aid training is an asset
- Must be willing to serve on the Winter Call Board
- This job requires you to work scheduled evening and night shifts in accordance with Article 11.05 (c) of CUPE Local 250 Collective Agreement
