Statement from Mayor Carter on tragic residential fire on Olive Avenue
On behalf of the City of Oshawa and Council, I extend my sincere condolences to the families, friends and neighbours affected by this tragic incident at 149 Olive Avenue.
“We join the family and friends during this time of grief and offer our thoughts and support,” said Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter.
“This is a sad time for our community,” added Mayor Carter. “Deputy Mayor Bob Chapman and I visited the scene when it was safe to do so and we are saddened by the devastation that has damaged seven homes. Lives were lost and others are displaced from their homes. I personally want to thank residents and members of the faith community for your offers of support and assistance to the families.”
In the early morning of Monday, March 22, emergency operators received a call of a house fire at 149 Olive Avenue between Simcoe Street and Ritson Road in Oshawa. Upon arrival, fire crews and first responders encountered heavy conditions and assisted multiple people.
“On behalf of Council, our appreciation goes out to the first responders – fire crews, police, EMS and to the Toronto Heavy Urban Search and Rescue unit on scene to assist. From the onset, Oshawa firefighters encountered extreme conditions and made a valiant effort to battle the blaze and reach the occupants,” said Mayor Carter.
