Statement from Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter recognizing Pride Month 2024
June is Pride Month, a time dedicated to supporting 2SLGBTQ+ people and communities in our city. The 2SLGBTQ+ community, which includes two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people (the “+” includes additional identities not captured in this list), is large and diverse, representing people of all different gender identities and sexual expressions. We celebrate the beauty and diversity of this community and recognize their fundamental rights to equality.
The City of Oshawa is proud of its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Each year, we honour this commitment by working to create an open and inclusive city and workplace for everyone. One way we do this is by providing ongoing training and education for staff to create environments where everyone feels welcomed and accepted. We understand that there is always more we can do to combat hate and discrimination and are devoted to doing our part. We will continue our efforts to move forward anti-discrimination policies and inclusive gender and sexual orientation initiatives that aim to combat hate and violence directed towards 2SLGBTQ+ people.
This Pride Month, we will be celebrating with other Durham Region municipalities by supporting the Youth Pride Durham event taking place on Saturday, June 22 at Regional Headquarters (605 Rossland Road East, Whitby). To learn more about the event, please visit yourvoice.durham.ca.
Throughout Pride Month, we proudly display the Pride flag, signifying Oshawa’s dedication to creating a safe, equitable and inclusive city where everyone feels they belong. Beyond June, I am committed to engaging with and learning from the community to address structural inequities. Let us all stand in solidarity with 2SLGBTQ+ people and communities this month to support their journey towards equity and equality.
