Job Description
Reporting to the Manager, Roads & Stormwater Management Ponds and under the direction of the Supervisor, Roads Maintenance or designate, perform general labouring duties which at times may require performing semi-skilled trade labouring duties and operating equipment.
Responsibilities:
- Lifting and loading refuse and debris onto vehicles
- Assisting Operators to safely maneuver vehicles and equipment as required
- Assisting Skilled Labourers by performing unskilled manual work using various hand tools, compressors, tampers, power saws, pumps, and may also include assisting Skilled Labourers with asphalt and concrete work, pipe laying, form work, rough carpentry, bridge and gabion repairs, brick and block laying and sewer work
- Acting as a traffic controller
- Perform general custodial duties
- Perform general cleaning, litter and garbage removal
- Work in accordance with the City of Oshawa’s Safe Work Standards and the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Perform various duties related to Summer and Winter Control/Call Board activities
- Perform other related duties as assigned

Requirements:
- Able to perform strenuous and repetitive work such as climbing, lifting and moving heavy items (80 lbs./approx. 36 kgs.), involving considerable effort, and capable of performing the work assigned in a safe manner and in any weather conditions
- Capable and willing to train for internal licensing on Grade 1 equipment, such as self-propelled Litter Vacuum at the City's convenience, based on normal operational requirements
- Capable and willing to train for internal licensing on Grade 2 equipment or higher, at the City’s convenience and in accordance with seniority, based on operational requirements
- Possession of a valid Ontario Class "DZ" Driver’s Licence, and able to pass the Corporation’s tests for motor vehicle operation
- Certified in First-Aid and CPR is required
- Previous experience in road construction or maintenance, concrete finishing, asphalt raking, sewer repairs and rough carpentry is considered an asset
- Knowledge and understanding of, and ability to apply safety policies, standards and legislation (Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act, WHMIS)
- Able to understand and follow oral and written instructions which deal with standardized situations
- Able to complete forms and records relevant to the job
- Good interpersonal skills; common sense and courtesy to deal with the general public and to discuss routine information with colleagues
- This position requires you to work scheduled evening, night and weekend shifts in accordance with Article 11.05(c) of the CUPE Local #250 Collective Agreement
- Must serve on the Summer and Winter Call Boards
This is a temporary position and the term of employment will be based on the availability of work.
As a condition of employment, the City of Oshawa will require successful candidates to undergo a Criminal Records and Judicial Matters check and an employment medical.
