City of Oshawa mourns the passing of Justice Murray Sinclair
On behalf of Oshawa City Council, Mayor Dan Carter expresses his deepest sorrow on the passing of The Honourable Murray Sinclair, and offers sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all Indigenous communities.
Justice Murray Sinclair was one of the first Indigenous judges in Canada and a former member of the Senate of Canada. Through this work, he worked passionately and tirelessly to advance the rights of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
He had an instrumental role as the former Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), in bringing awareness to the painful truths of the Indian Residential Schools in Canada through interviews with thousands of survivors across the country. The final report of this commission documented and established the 94 Calls to Action aimed at all Canadians to guide meaningful reconciliation between Indigenous Peoples and Canada.
The City of Oshawa honours the memory of Murray Sinclair through our commitment to learning, understanding and taking action toward implementation of these Calls to Action.
