City of Oshawa records strongest year of building activity with over $900 million in permit values
The City of Oshawa is pleased to report that building permit activity in 2022 exceeded any year in Oshawa’s recorded history. Oshawa’s previous building permit record was set in 2017 at $614 million. In 2022, the City shattered that record with more than $900 million in building permit values!
In total Oshawa set 25 new building records in 2022. Highlights include:
- highest total construction value issued in any one year ($901+ million)
- highest total residential construction value issued in any one year ($762+ million)
- 12 new industrial and commercial buildings, which continue to generate even more local jobs.
New buildings issued in 2022 include RioCan’s development at Simcoe Street North and Winchester Road West; new industrial buildings across the city; and two new apartment buildings.
The City has thrived through a remarkable run of development activity in recent years. From 2018-2022, the City issued more than $250 million in job-producing industrial building permits and more than $2.7 billion in total building permit values over the same period.
Looking towards Oshawa’s economic future, the Northwood Business Park presents the City’s next prime employment development opportunity. Approximately 202 hectares (500 acres) of developable land designated for employment and commercial uses are attracting further investment in proximity to our post-secondary institutions and the Oshawa Executive Airport.
