Statement from Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter on the City’s Centennial Year

Today marks the start of the City of Oshawa’s centennial year and with it the beginning of a yearlong celebration of Oshawa, its influence across our country and around the world.

I am so proud to be the Mayor of this great city at such a monumental time in its history. Some of the greatest milestones in Canadian history have come out of Oshawa thanks to its curious and innovative leaders, and that statement remains true today.

We have so much to celebrate. Oshawa is a vibrant and diverse city, home to three globally-recognized post-secondary institutions, and state-of-the-art health care and research facilities. We are a community of choice, offering fantastic amenities, finding innovative solutions and ever-evolving to meet the needs of those who choose to call Oshawa their home.

While we are proud to recognize 2024 as Oshawa’s 100^th anniversary as a city, we are also taking the time to honour the Indigenous Peoples who have cared for and maintained these lands from time immemorial. The deep connection of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis people within this territory is woven into the fabric of our city, contributing important traditions, wisdom and a rich cultural heritage.

Throughout 2024, I’d love for you to join us to celebrate the past 100+ years; we’re celebrating the dreamers who dared to be curious, the builders who turned visions into reality, our community leaders and their partnerships who continue to shape our city, and most importantly, you. Our community members are the heart and soul of this great city, defining its character and shaping its identity, and that is why it is truly extraordinary.

I encourage you to take time this year to be inspired by the city’s last 100+ years and consider what you want your Oshawa to look like in the future, because there’s one thing I’m sure of, our best days are in front of us.
