Steering towards compliance: Oshawa’s licensing reminder for driving schools and instructors
The City of Oshawa is reminding driving schools and instructors whose business is based and/or vehicles are used for lessons or tests in Oshawa about the importance of adhering to its requirements under the Driving School and Instructor Licensing System.
To assist with compliance, the City’s Municipal Law Enforcement Officers are undertaking an education and enforcement campaign this November and December to inform driving schools and instructors of the current standards.
The City’s Driving School and Instructor Licensing System was developed following municipal comparator research, community input and in response to resident’s complaints, and:
- addresses the issue of intensified use of local roads by driving school instructors and related safety issues for the public and Oshawa neighbourhoods; and,
- aligns with and supports the provincial driving school and instructor licensing system.
The Licensing System includes a prohibited area in Oshawa where no driving school vehicles may operate, except for:
- picking up or dropping off a student that resides in the prohibited area; or
- using a driving school vehicle for the purposes of a road test conducted by the DriveTest Centre.
The prohibited area includes the following boundaries: Adelaide Ave. W., Adelaide Ave. E., Ritson Rd. N., Ritson Rd. S., Bloor St. E., Bloor St. W., Thornton Rd. S., and Thornton Rd. N.
Building on the success of similar programs in other Ontario municipalities, the Licensing System and Prohibited Area Standards in Oshawa contributes to creating a safer and less congested driver education environment in the neighbourhoods near the Oshawa DriveTest Centre and along Drive Test Centre testing routes.
